Welsh trugs

trugs is a system whereby you can teach a child or student to read Welsh, as long as you have an understanding of the Welsh language, by playing fun card games. It’s easy!

Here's the Theory

Being able to read requires us to know the code of our language. This code is taught to us in a variety of different ways, by looking at books together, having stories read to us. Eventually we pick up how to read.

trugs is an easy and enjoyable way to help our children learn to read.

The language has been put into phonic stages to make it an easy to follow step by step process. This means that everyone can help someone learn to read – it’s just building on previous knowledge and progress is inevitable.

In Box 1 there are the first 5 of these reading stages and this enables children and students to go from the starting point of a reading age of about 5 ½ yrs at stage 1 up to a reading age of about 7 ½ yrs at stage 5.

Any age student can use trugs

Here's the fun

People, whether the teachers parents children or students, don’t want the worry of how to learn to read. We all want to read, we all want the process to be enjoyable and successful.

So trugs has three different – traditional, family-type - card games to play at each of the reading stages.

Play, read, practise, reinforce and consolidate

Everyone laughs, interacts, has fun and enjoys each others company.

That’s why trugs works – because it’s fun and professionally put together.

A short note to say a big thank you for the first box in Welsh, a valuable resource, we are looking forward for the next boxes in Welsh.

Gair bach i ddweud pa mor werthfawr yw'r bocs cyntaf o TRUGS yn y Gymraeg. Mae'r disgyblion yn ein hysgol ni (Ysgol Coed y Gof) wrth eu bodd yn defnyddio y cardiau TRUGS i helpu wella eu sgiliau darllen. Mae'n adnodd arbennig o dda yn ein barn ni, gan fod y plant yn elwa trwy chwarae gemau darllen sydd yn rhoi hyder iddynt ddarllen yn llwyddiannus. Dyli'r gweld brwdfrydedd y disgyblion wrth chwarae y gemau a'i parodrwydd i gymryd rhan yn y weithgaredd.

Byddwn ni a diddordeb mawr yn natblygiad pellach o'r gyfres TRUGS yn y Gymraeg sef bocsys 2 a 3. Mae diffyg adnoddau hwylus i hybu darllen yn y Gymraeg felly gwelwn fod TRUGS yn adnodd gwerthchweil i unrhyw ysgol Gymraeg ac yn sicr oddi fewn yr Adran Anghenion Arbennig.

Diolch yn fawr am y bocs cyntaf edrychwn ymlaen at y ddau nesaf.

Dear Joanna

I recently bought Welsh Trugs to help my 6 year old nephew, Sonny, with his reading skills. Sonny attends a welsh medium school and I am a welsh learner in my 4th year, and I am also a qualified primary school teacher.

Sonny is currently being assessed for aspergers, which is thought to be very mild and so I bought Trugs for his reading skills and his social skills. I also intend to use the game in my second language welsh classes.

We get together on a Thursday after school. We have tea together and then we settle down to play. Sonny absolutely loves playing the games and I can see his word recognition improving from week to week. It is also helping him to understand about taking his turn and he enjoys keeping a score chart too. He inevitably beats me hands down and I find that as the games are in welsh, then Sonny talks to me in welsh as we are playing. He will not normally answer me in welsh when I ask him a question.

It is difficult to get hold of good quality welsh educational resources and, as a learner, the games are helping me to improve my own language skills too.

I have taken Trugs to my welsh class to show other learners who ahve children attending welsh medium schools and I have also shown the game to the SENco of Sonny's school, I believe that they were so impressed that they bought a box!

Well done for Welsh Trugs - please can we have some more Welsh medium educational resources.

Best Wishes

Jayne Morgan
