I have used trugs a lot in my support sessions with a wide range of different learners and am a great advocate of the programme- I have seen some wonderful improvements in my students’ reading speed, fluency and confidence, and believe the programme can be tailored to use with students of all ages. The explicit teaching of rules via the engaging, multisensory games, reduces the ambiguity behind the English language and empowers learners by allowing them to apply these rules to decoding new words. This has enabled both their spelling and reading accuracy to increase, and with that, their self-esteem.
Teaching Reading Using Games
TRUGS are a fantastic way of learning to read, spell and be fun.
There are so many ways to use TRUGS. The students I work with in senior school setting with very low reading/spelling ages and also inclusive to those with other learning difficulties.
The groups of 4 love them.
I just want to email and say that I work with adults with learning difficulties for Devon Adult and Community Learning and my adults LOVE Trugs!!!! I also tutor GCSE English and I have been using Box 3 to extend my student’s vocabulary. Often our most able students don’t get a chance to have such fun when they are learning!!!
I started using your games for the first time this week and the children I teach love them. I work 1:1 with children who are in care, many of whom have had poor experiences of education and also have specific learning difficulties. They are also mostly boys who are disaffected with reading.
I just wanted to let you know that I am really glad that I made the decision to buy them.
TRUGS are one of my ‘desert island’ resources. I am so glad that they were recommended to me quite some years ago by a SENDCO friend. No teacher of reading should be without them! These games wrap over-learning in so much fun that progress happens naturally. TRUGS dovetails nicely with any approach or scheme. Confidence and automaticity increase rapidly, equipping children to enter the wonderful world of reading for pleasure.
